Parkhill School Technical Department
Craft and Design S1 to S3 BGE
Pupils will learn a range of skills and procedures to enable them to design and make a selection of artefacts throughout the three year period. The coursework is more practical than theory which gives the pupils a very tangible element to their learning. Pupils will learn about sustainability and how they can have a positive effect on the environment.
Level 1 Explore materials to discover what they can do
Explore tools to discover what they can do
Estimate and measure using appropriate instruments during practical activities and design challenges
Adapt and improve, where appropriate, through trial and error after having evaluated their own work
Develop an interest in using drawing and colour techniques manually to represent ideas in different learning situations
Models: Trinket Box, Mug Tree, Truck Bank, Toy Car, Key Rack
Level 2 Use problem-solving strategies to construct models through discovery and imagination
Adapt and improve, where appropriate, by using feedback after having evaluated their own work
Use drawing techniques manually to represent objects or ideas, enhancing them using effects such as shadow
Be capable of making reasoned choices relating to the environment, sustainable development and ethical, economic and cultural issues
Models: Sloping Rack, Letter Rack, Jar Rack, Jewellery Box, Small Cabinet
Level 3 Gain confidence and dexterity in the use of materials
Gain confidence and dexterity in the use of equipment
Practise a range of preparation techniques and processes to manufacture a variety of items in wood, showing imagination and creativity
Gain confidence and dexterity in the use of tools
Use problem solving strategies and show creativity in a design challenge
Plan the production of items which meet needs at home or in the world of work
Models: Design and Make Storage Unit, Footstool, Small Table, Clock
N.B. pupils at level 4 will be offered a design and make topic of their choice.
Craft & Design/ Technical as an Option
The study of design is an integral part of life. The Craft & Design course gives pupils the skills to think about design and realise design solutions through craft models. Craft & Design seeks to develop the pupil’s awareness of their environment and practical skills through the process of design and making.
National 3 Practical Craft Skills Working with tools.
1 Use a selected range of tools, as appropriate, for marking out and measuring
2 Use a selected range of tools, as appropriate, for preliminary cutting and shaping of materials
National 3 Practical Craft Skills Making an Item.
1 Manufacture a wooden or metal item from working drawings
2 Apply appropriate finishes to a wooden or metal item
National 3 Practical Craft Skills Working with materials.
1 Identify a variety of materials used in practical woodworking
and/or metalworking.
2 Work with a selected range of materials to complete basic woodworking and/or metalworking tasks
The aims of the course are for pupils to develop informed attitudes towards design and evaluation of products in everyday use, form their own ideas about design situations and communicate these ideas by means of writing and sketching, use manufacturing processes and equipment skilfully and safely to create and assemble fully crafted artefacts.
National 4 Practical Woodworking
Practical Woodworking: Carcase Construction: Focuses on developing skills in making woodworking joints and assemblies commonly used in carcase construction.
Practical Woodworking: Machining and Finishing: Focuses on developing skills using common machine and power tools.
Practical Woodworking: Flat-frame Construction: Focuses on developing skills in the use of woodworking tools and in making woodworking joints and assemblies commonly used in flat-frame joinery.
To gain an award at National 4 learners must complete all units as well as the Added Value Unit.
