Parkhill School Home Economics Department
Rationale
As part of a health promoting school, the Home Economics Department aims to provide pupils with the practical skills and knowledge to enable them to adopt a healthier lifestyle. They will participate in a range of activities that follow current dietary guidelines. The department is committed to all pupils accessing the curriculum from S1 – S6
Aims
To achieve this, the department strives to –
· Implement the Teaching and Learning Policy of the school.
Broad General Education
Pupils are allocated 2 periods per week. This is presented as a double period. During this time pupils will be involved in a wide range of activities including practical cookery lessons, event planning, research, organising displays of work and any relevant paperwork related to the topic.
Throughout S1 – S3 pupils will learn about and take part in the following topics:
· Food safety
· Safety in the kitchen
· Food hygiene
· Personal hygiene
· Healthy eating
· Nutrition
· Food labelling
· Current dietary advice
· Practical food preparation skills
· Organisational skills
· Working with others
· Food journeys
· Food from around the world
· Food provenance
· Locally produced food / seasonal food
· Health promotion events
· Inter disciplinary learning
Pupils will work independently, in pairs or in a group situation to complete a variety of tasks. This will improve their practical skills, organisational skills, social skills and also help develop confident individuals.
Senior Phase
Senior pupils will be allocated 3 periods per week. There will be 1 single period and 1 double. During the single period, pupils will be involved in discussing and planning for the practical lesson. During the double period, pupils will complete their practical activities and any relevant paperwork relating to the unit of study.
