Parkhill School Physical Education Department
Mission statement:
Physical education is providing learners with a platform from which they can build physical competences, improve aspects of fitness, and develop personal and interpersonal skills and attributes. We aim to enable learners to develop the concepts and skills necessary for participation in a wide range of physical activity, sport, dance and outdoor learning, and enhance their physical wellbeing in preparation for leading a fulfilling, active and healthy lifestyle.
The pupils will encounter a variety of practical learning experiences, including working on their own, with a partner and in small and large groups, and using small and large equipment and apparatus, both outdoors and indoors.
Learning in, through and about physical education is enhanced by participating on a regular basis in a wide range of purposeful, challenging, progressive and enjoyable physical activities with choice built in for all learners. The Scottish Government expects schools to continue to work towards the provision of at least two hours of good quality physical education for every child, every week.
Curriculum:
S1-3
The key aim of S1-3 PE is to develop the skills and attributes of the significant aspects of learning. This is done through 3 main areas of study; Cooperation and Competition; Movement Skills, Competencies and Concepts; and Evaluating and Appreciating in line with Curriculum for Excellence. Throughout this process, we also include opportunities for pupils to improve their literacy and numeracy skills, whilst maintaining a committed focus on improving pupils Health and Wellbeing.
The S1-3 broad general education phase of physical education consists of blocks of sports that aim to encompass a broad and varied selection of activities that will give pupils a taste of what the world of sport and exercise can offer. Currently we offer: fitness, basketball, football, badminton, table-tennis, gymnastics, cricket, softball, dodge ball, athletics and cross-country.
During the S1-3 broad general education phase, pupils will take part in activities that have been planned around, and are assessed within the experiences and outcomes of the Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) framework. Within these experiences there is an emphasis on skill acquisition, safety in handling and working with equipment, developing fitness, promoting healthy life-style choices, developing self-esteem, gaining knowledge and understanding of sports, communication, and working with others.
S4-6
The senior Phase of Physical Education (PE) offers pupils the opportunity to gain National qualifications (currently N2, N3 and N4) in PE by building on their physical performance skills as well as their knowledge of sports, factors affecting performance in sport and physical exercise. This senior certificated phase focuses on improvement within a narrower range of physical activities to allow pupils the time to develop their skills and knowledge within an identified activity.
Learners will work within a focused and like-minded group of peers and will rely on each other for practice, competition, motivation, support and assessment.
