Rational/Mission Statement
Personal and social development is a fundamental aspect of the whole child. It is essentially concerned with the development of life skills . All aspects of a young person’s experiences at home , in school and out with school contributes to personal and social development. The main purpose of Health and Wellbeing within Curriculum for Excellence is to develop the knowledge and understanding of skills ,capabilities and attributes necessary for mental ,emotional, social and physical wellbeing now and in the future.
Aims and Objectives
In Parkhill school Health and Wellbeing department we aim to enhance and enrich the lives of all the young people who learn with us. We want them to develop their confidence and resilience in order to equip them for now and later into adulthood .Our aims and objectives are to help the young people in our care :
· Make informed decisions in order to improve their mental , emotional ,social , and physical wellbeing.
· Experience challenge and enjoyment.
· Experience aspects of healthy living.
· Apply their mental, emotional and social skills to pursue a healthy lifestyle.
· Recognise the different ways they learn and for the teachers to develop a variety of learning experiences to suit their needs.
· To become self aware and independent individuals who can safely and happily take part in society.
· To take part in other types of learning experiences from outer agencies in the form of workshops ,visits and outings.
· To consider themselves to have equal value and importance to each other.
· To encourage and capitalise on the potential to experience learning and new challenges in the outdoor environment.
Curriculum – BGE and Senior Phase
In BGE the pupils will learn about emotional literacy , drug awareness ,general and dental hygiene , healthy eating ,sleeping for good health ,road safety and general safety issues including first aid .
All year groups will take part in SHRE (Sexual Health and Relationship Education)
S1 will learn about the importance of going out and keeping safe , feelings relating to changing relationships, emotional changes during puberty ,body parts associated to reproduction and the process of reproduction.
S2 will learn about the changes to during puberty, sexual body parts ,gender conditioning ,self-esteem ,child rights ,where to access support and relationship assertiveness .
S3 will learn about morals and values in relationships, what attraction is in a relationship, rights and responsibilities and legal issues in relationships ,sexual harm and domestic violence ,accessing support and consent within relationships.
S4 will learn about boundaries and needs in a relationship ,gender perception , being assertive ,STIs ,safer sex , rights and responsibilities , discrimination and conflict.
S5 will learn about morals and values ,legal rights in relationships ,support agencies ,sexual exploitation ,self- examination and regular health screening .
S6 will learn about self esteem ,managing relationships ,sexual health services ,media influences , parent /carers and young people , sexual humour ,more freedom more risk , HIV and AIDS .
Senior phase
S4 pupils are presented for the Improving Wellbeing Award level 3 /4 award. The pupils will understand ways to improve wellbeing from a personal ,community or global point of view . They will achieve this by developing a project on the chosen subject and finally make a presentation about what they have learned.
S5 pupils will be presented for the Exploring Award level 3 /4 award . The pupils will explore different aspects of wellbeing such as physical , mental, emotional or social and understand the links between them . They will achieve this by developing a project as a class or by themselves on the chosen subject or theme and finally make a presentation about what they have learned.
S6 pupils will be encouraged to develop a set thinking skills called Habits of the Mind .The learning will be linked to issues about health and wellbeing. These thinking skills will be based on the transitional period that the S6 pupils will be experiencing and support them develop good habits for life in school and beyond.
